In the previous installments of this series we discussed modernizing legacy infrastructure, the role of data and the adoption of a hybrid cloud model. In our final entry, we will be examining the catalyst that will move organizations forward when undertaking digital transformation.
As much as digital transformation is about adopting modernization efforts, it is also about the people that will be utilizing these new systems and platforms. Traditionally, IT and business teams have been separate entities occasionally interacting when maintenance or technical issues arose. However as markets shift, skill sets will evolve and converge.
In order to successfully align and coordinate an organization around its modernization efforts, alliances will need to be developed. The best performing companies will be those that successfully combine business and IT skills to transform new technology into business outcomes. Operational alignment of those who are interacting and completing work for the clients (i.e. business teams), staff who are creating the digital platforms (i.e. developers) and the IT personnel who are providing and maintaining the technology to deliver on the strategy will be mandatory to innovate and remain competitive.
All three teams must have a seat at the table and work collaboratively, building upon the expertise of each individual group. According to recent research done by the Altimeter Group, “Digital transformation becomes a way of business and a new environment and culture must be established to identify and act upon technology and market trends in pilot and, eventually, at scale.”
From the perspective of the consumer new initiatives will be designed to maximize engagement, minimize frustration and deliver products and services more efficiently.
The irony about “digital transformation” is that it is not just about technology and digitization but also about people. How an enterprise adapts its culture and vision will be just as crucial as leaving behind legacy infrastructure where it is no longer relevant.
